How To Grow Garlic At Home - Easiest method
Growing garlic at home is easy and requires little space. Even a small garden is enough to provide a good supply of garlic for self-certification with proper care. Garlic is grown by planting individual cloves. To get started, all you need is fresh garlic bulbs with large cloves. Avoid using garlic that has become soft.
Step 1: Preparing the Garlic
Select Fresh Garlic:
Separate the garlic cloves which you will sprout into garlic plants. These will later produce garlic bulbs.
Plan to use only the large cloves and discard the smaller ones as they do not grow as well.
Step 2: Preparing the Potting Mix
Mix Ingredients:
Use a mix of 60% garden soil and 40% organic compost or vermicompost.
Mix it well.
Prepare the Container:
Take a container with drainage holes.
Cover the holes with stones or gravel to ensure proper drainage.
Fill the container with the potting mix.
Step 3: Planting the Garlic
Planting:
Make small holes in the soil with your finger, about 2 inches deep.
Place the garlic cloves into the holes, pointed side up.
Space the cloves 4 to 5 inches apart for better growth.
Covering:
Gently cover the cloves with soil and press down lightly.
Watering:
Water the newly planted garlic thoroughly.
Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged to prevent rot.
Place the pot in full sunlight and gradually reduce watering as the plants grow.
Step 4: Caring for Your Garlic
Maintenance:
Garlic needs well-draining soil and regular watering, but avoid overwatering.
Monitor the plants for any signs of disease or pests.
Step 5: Harvesting
Harvest Time:
Typically, garlic is ready to harvest after 90 to 120 days.
Harvest when the tops start to turn yellow and fall over.
